The EBU is one of the orgnisers of the bi-annual ‘World Electronic Media Forum’. This year it takes place in Accra Ghana from 16-18 November 2011. The WEMF was established nine years ago, with the encouragement of Kofi Annan, then Secretary General of the United Nations. The UN had then convened the WSIS , the ‘world summit on the information society’. The WSIS encouraged steps to bring internet technology to the developing world. The WEMF V was intended to balance the emphasis on technology at WSIS with more thought about where Internet content would come from, and how it would change society. The WEMF meets every two years in different regions of the world, hosted by a ‘local’ broadcasting union. This year it is the turn of the African Union of Broadcasters, the AUB. Slated for discussion at this years’ WEMF are the digital transition, media and trust, citizen generated content, and of great value in the developing world, lowering the cost of programme making. A number of EBU members and staff are there. Read David Wood’s daily blog here.
